Season comes to end after loss to Yellowjackets

DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota Morris' five-run ninth-inning rally comes up one run short in a 12-11 loss to UW-Superior Friday in a UMAC Postseason Baseball Tournament elimination game in Duluth.

Like they said against Bethany Lutheran Thursday, Minnesota Morris jumped out to a multi-run lead Friday against the Yellowjackets. After getting a run in the first, the Cougars added three in the third to take a 4-0 advantage. With Zach Kuefler and Chandler Erickson on second and third following singles, Connor Spindler drove them both in with a single up the middle. Spindler would later score to extend the lead.

Starting pitcher Joey Hyde held UW-Superior to only one hit through four. In the fifth, their bats started to heat up. The Yellowjackets scored three times in the fifth and five more times in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead on the Cougars.

That lead grew to 12-6 going into the ninth. The Cougars would not go out lightly though. After two runs and two outs were recorded, Bryce Jergenson kept the game alive with a two-strike, RBI single up the middle to score pinch runner Mitch Baumann to make it 12-9. Later, with two runners on, Chandler Erickson nearly tied the game with a home run, but drove in two with a double off the left field wall to trim the deficit to 12-11. Spindler nearly tied the game, but UWS' second baseman made a diving stop of his line drive shot to end the rally and the game.

Erickson and Kuefler each had four hits in the Cougar 14-hit attack.

Minnesota Morris' season comes to an end with an 18-20 overall record. Their 12 wins in UMAC play is most in program history.
