DULUTH, Minn. - Minnesota Morris trailed by 8 going into the final quarter, but outscored St. Scholastica 19-9 in the final 10 minutes to stage a 69-67 comeback win Saturday afternoon in UMAC women's basketball action in Duluth.
Within a minute of the final frame, the Cougars trimmed the deficit to 59-54 after lay-ins from
Bailey Miller and
Elli Stevenson. The two teams exchanged baskets over the next five minutes. A
Mauren Thiesen lay-in and free throw dwindled the lead to 3 at 67-64 with 3:31 left. A minute later,
Kendra Raths' lay-in made it 67-66. It remained that way until the final minute when Raths gave the Cougars their first lead since 3:15 remained in the second quarter off an inbounds feed from Thiesen that made it 68-67 with 28 seconds left. A Stevenson free throw extended the lead to 69-67 with 11 seconds left. St. Scholastica had the final possession and drew a foul with 1 second remaining. The first free throw missed then the Cougars rebounded an intentional miss on the second to secure the win.
Stevenson led all scorers with 23 points. Thiesen and Miller each scored 13 and Raths added eight while pulling down 10 rebounds.
Minnesota Morris (7-12, 6-4 in UMAC) hits the road again for a game Wednesday at Crown.
