Minneapolis, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Morris women's basketball team opened up the 2010-11 season in fine fashion this evening (Nov. 16), with an 84-65 road win over host North Central.

The key was a 16-3 run to start that second half that turned a 45-38 Cougar lead into a 61-41 advantage after an Alyssa Silva (Maple Grove, Minn.) three-pointer at the 13:32 mark. The Cougars were in cruise control from there on out, leading by at least 16 the rest of the way.

Minnesota, Morris (1-0) shot 44.8% (30-of-67) from the floor as a team, including a 36.4% (8-of-22) from behind the arc. All 13 players saw the floor, with 10 factoring into the scoring.

None had a bigger impact in the scoring mix that senior Steph Roggenbuck (Osakis, Minn.), who finished with 25 points in 25 minutes of play. Roggenbuck made 9-of-13 from the floor on the night, including 2-of-3 from long range and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. She also pitched in eight boards to complete her effort.

Joining Roggenbuck on the top of the scoring chart was Emily Mehr (Aitkin, Minn.) with 16 and Silva with 13. Mehr made all three of her three-pointers on the night and finished 6-of-12 from the floor with five rebounds.

In her first game as a Cougar, Silva went 4-of-10 in 19 minutes to aide in the effort.

North Central (0-1) shot an impressive 46.8% (22-of-47) on the night, but turned the ball over 25 times and was out-rebounded 38-to-25.  The Cougars had 15 boards on the offensive end, leading to 17 second chance points, compared to just two for the Rams.

At 1-0, the Cougars get to open up the home season in just two days, when they host Dakota State at Jim Gremmels Court on Thursday, Nov. 18. Tip-off for the Cougars and Trojans is set for 7:00 p.m.
