The Cougar men's basketball welcomes Northland and St. Scholastica on Jan. 28 and 29 respectively this weekend, as the look to stay at the top of the UMAC standings. The LumberJacks tip-off with the Cougars at 7:30 p.m. Friday night, while the Saints finish off Saturday's action with a 5:00 p.m. tip.

As always, each game can be seen live on the Cougar Sports Network.

After a tough loss to Martin Luther last Saturday, UMM currently sits in a third place tie with St. Scholastica at 3-2 in conference play, behind Northwestern and Bethany Lutheran who are each 4-1. Ironically, each of the teams with just one loss can thank the Cougars for their lone setback.

After opening conference play with a tough loss, the Cougars ripped off three straight wins to move into first, before their loss to Martin Luther. Despite the Cougars top-ranked scoring offense, it will be defense that is most iomportant to getting wins in conference play.

“Defense is our key,” senior guard Daniel Fragodt (Benson, Minn.) said. “I think when we get our defense going and get back on defense, our offense increases, so I think playing defense is the key for the rest of the year.”

Behind the Cougars and Saints each at 3-2, is Northland at 1-4 on the young conference season. But their one win came against that same Martin Luther team that was able to knock off the Cougars, proving that anyone can be beaten as the UMAC season rolls on. Guidance from the older players will be what it takes to keep this team playing well this weekend, and secure two more important league victories.

“Leadership, the whole leadership aspect,” junior forward Zach Meyer (Cottonwood, Minn.) said. “Making sure everybody's on track, telling guys to come out with intensity any time you're on that court.”

Students, also be sure to make it up to the concession stand to sign up for your chance at “The Best Seats In the House”!!  The winner receives a pizza, and can select two friends to watch the games on a courtside couch. Get there early to sign up!
