UMAC Women's Playoff Breakdown
Listen Live
With just four games left on the schedule, every goal sits right in front of the Cougar men's and women's basketball teams.
This weekend they head to the Twin Cities to begin the stretch run of UMAC play, as they take on Crown on Friday (Feb. 11), and Northwestern on Saturday (Feb. 12). As always the women begin the double header each night, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, with the men following right after each night.
On Saturday against Northwestern, you can watch live through NWCEagles.com
The Cougar women sit at 15-6 overall, but are two games out front in UMAC action with a perfect 10-0 record. They have already wrapped up a first round UMAC Tournament game, and have the opportunity to clinch their second consecutive regular season UMAC Championship and No. 1 seed in the tournament with two wins this weekend.
With a win over Crown (0-21, 0-10) to start the weekend, the Cougars will get second place Northwestern on Saturday who sits at 12-9 and 8-2 currently. A Morris win there and they will wrap up everything with two games left to play.
So then does head coach Tim Grove go Tony Dungy on the bit and sit the starters to save them for the playoffs…????? That's a talker for another day.
With an 8-2 UMAC mark (12-9 overall), the Cougar men remain one-game back of Northwestern who is in first at 9-1 (15-6 overall). The Eagles one loss came to the Cougars, meaning if the Cougars win Saturday and each team ends with two losses, the tiebreakers would go the Cougars way.
First though, the men take on Crown who – despite their 3-7 league record – is still in the playoff hunt.
Having won nine of their last 10, if the men can keep it going it will mean their first UMAC Championship since the 2004-05 season.
The UMAC Tournament begins on Wednesday Feb. 23. We know the women will be at home and the men can go a long way to securing a first round home game this weekend. Then the Championship games are on Saturday, Feb. 26 with the highest seed remaining earning the right to host.
