After a pair of narrow losses in the regular season, the Minnesota Morris men's basketball team will look to change its fortune when they face off with Bethany Lutheran in the UMAC Tournament. Morris enters as the No. 4 seed, with Bethnay Lutheran as the top seed after winning the 2011-12 UMAC Championship.
Game Time: The Cougars take on the Vikings at 7:30 p.m. in Mankato, Minn. on Feb. 22.
The only team in the UMAC that the Cougars have yet to beat this season, they lost in overtime to the Vikings at home in their first meeting, and saw a lead in the final minutes slip away on the road in their second meeting. This is the third straight year that the two teams have met up in the UMAC Semifinals, with the Cougars winning both the previous match-ups.
Story Line: The Cougars are looking to avenge to regular season losses to the Vikings – by an average of just six points – while advancing to their third straight UMAC Tournament Championship game.
Minnesota Morris Notes: Finished fourth in the UMAC with a 7-7 record … 11-14 overall … ended the season with back-to-back wins … Cougars have won their first playoff game the last four seasons … UMAC Tournament Champions in 2010 … playing in fifth straight UMAC Tournament, and meeting Bethany Lutheran for the fourth time in the opening round over the stretch … Cougars have won last two game by an average of 20 points.
Bethany Lutheran Notes: Won the UMAC Championship with a 13-1 league record … went 15-10 overall … started conference play 13-0, before losing to Crown in overtime in the final game of the season … clinched regular season title on second to last weekend of the season … have been knocked out in the semifinals of the last two UMAC Tournaments … broke and eight game losing streak to Minnesota Morris with overtime win on Jan. 20 … top scoring team in the UMAC at nearly 75 points per game … second in the UMAC in scoring defense, allowing just over 63 points per game … also best in the league allowing their opponents just a 39% shooting mark from the field.
