Box Score MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris (10-11, 5-5 UMAC) had all five starters score double figures on Tuesday night as they shot 55.4% as a team from the field in a 84-72 win over the Presentation Saints (12-10).
Evan Reller tied a career high with 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the field.
Brendon Foss picked up a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The other scorers in double digits for UMM were
Logan Orazem with 14 and both Steven Birman and
RJ Dean had 13 points.
The Cougars shot 64% in the first half as they held a 36-34 lead over a Saints team that shot 53.9% from the field in the first half. The Saints were 6-10 from three point range which helped them keep pace with the Morris.
Minnesota Morris finished the game 7-13 from behind the arc and their starters were a combined 7-9 from three. Dean was 3-3 on the night for the Cougars and did not have turnover as the Cougars main ball handler. UMM had a 19-8 assists to turnover ratio which was led by Birman who had five assists. The Cougars scored 38 points in the paint as they were able to get the Saints big men in foul trouble.
Both teams came out of the gate on fire in the first half as Cougars held an 18-16 lead at the ten minute mark. UMM missed just three shots in the opening ten minutes as they connected on nine of their first 12 shots to start the game. Leading the Saints 20-16 with just less than nine minutes left in the half PC scored six straight to take a two point lead. Morris responded and took the lead back but PC once again had an answer and took a 27-23 lead with 5:56 left in the half, it would be the Saints largest lead of the game. Morris knotted the score at 29 and went on take a 36-31 lead 1:49 left in the half. Presentation's Chas Haymond hit a three pointer with 51 seconds left in the half as the Saints cut the lead to two going into the break.
Presentation could not close the gap as the second half started and Morris held a 45-37 lead with 15:47 left. The Saints never cut the lead to one possession and Morris used an 8-2 run to increase their lead to 57-47. Minnesota Morris had increased their lead to as big as 13 as they picked up an 84-72 win.
Morris will host both Northland and St. Scholastica this weekend as they try to improve their chances to make the UMAC Tournament. Northland and UMM tip off on Friday at 7:30, the next day St. Scholastica and Morris will tip off at 5:00 p.m.
