Four-Peat: Cougars Clinch UMAC

Box Score MORRIS, Minn. – Four the fourth straight year the Minnesota Morris Cougars (16-7, 12-0 UMAC) are Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Champions after dismissing St. Scholastica (10-13, 7-5 UMAC) 73-58 on Saturday afternoon. They clinch the conference as solo champions thanks to a Martin Luther beating Northwestern 69-60. This ensures that Minnesota Morris will be the number one seed in the UMAC Tournament which starts on Feb. 20.
 
The Cougars got 23 points from Emily Mehr, 20 from Kendra Wycoff and 12 from Kayla Kramer. The team rebounded from a tough first half to shoot 53.8% from the field in the second half. The difference however, was the first half in which both teams struggled from the field yet UMM led 32-19 at the break. Morris hit four three pointers compared to CSS zero and had seven more made free throws which helped the Cougars gain the 13 point advantage.

Cougars UMAC Champions 12-13
 
It was a tight game in the first eight minutes of the half as the Cougars held a 10-8 lead. Two free throws from Kramer and a three pointer from Wycoff gave Minnesota Morris a seven point lead with 10:34 left. The Saints responded to score seven straight points to tie the score at 15 with 7:42 on the clock. Wycoff and Mehr would combine for 12 of the next 14 points for the Cougars took a 29-19 lead. Wycoff had eight of the points during the Cougars 14-4 run. The run continued as Emily Auch hit a free throw and Cori Becker hit a jumper to give UMM the 32-19 halftime lead.
 
The second half was a high scoring back and forth battle as each team seemed to find their shooting stroke as the game went on. Morris had the better stroke earlier in the second half as the lead would grow to 21 at 45-27. St. Scholastica could not get any closer than 11 as the Cougars went on to win 73-58.
 
The Cougars are now off until next Friday as they host Bethany Lutheran followed by Martin Luther on Saturday to wrap up the regular season. Saturday's game will be senior night for the Cougars as they honor Emily Mehr and Kelsey Erickson.
