ST. PETER, Minn. – After rallying from a 12 point deficit at the half the Cougars (1-3) were unable to complete the comeback falling 77-73 to Gustavus (2-1) on Saturday evening.
RJ Dean led the team in scoring with 15 on 6-11 shooting.
Three other Cougars finished in double figures on the night.
John Haseman had 12 and both Tyler Ukkleberg and
Neil Helgeson had ten.
The game was tight early as both Morris and Gustavus kept answering each other offensively. Through the first 12 minutes of play the largest lead was four for both teams. The Gusties went on a 12-0 run over a span of 4:11 to take a 33-21 lead. The 12 point margin would be the same at the end of the half.
Gustavus would push their lead to 14 but the Cougars clawed their way back in the game, cutting that lead in half at the 14 minute mark. The Gusties would respond and pushed their lead back to 13 by the halfway point. Minnesota Morris was not done however and they went on a 13-2 run, cutting the deficit to just two at 62-60. Dean hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 64 with 3:22 left.
Unfortunately, Morris did not find a way to take the lead and Gustavus went on a quick 6-0 run.
Joe Roggenbuck completed a three point play to bring the Cougars back within one possession but they would not get any closer, falling 77-73.
