MORRIS, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris Cougars (2-6) held Wartburg (7-0) 10 points below their season average but the Knights were still able to pick up the win beating UMM, 74-54.
Kendra Wycoff was the lone Cougar in double figures, scoring 12 points.
Tori Holt and
Jessica Love each added eight.
Wartburg was able to use their height to help outscore the Cougars 36-16 in the paint. The Knights also took advantage of Cougar turnovers converting them into 17 points.
Morris held the Knights to 40.0% percent shooting in the first half and made ten first half free throws to hang with Wartburg. UMM had an early lead but a 21-4 run for the Knights gave them a 28-17 lead with 7:18 left. The Cougars battled back thanks to a 17-4 run and took a 34-32 lead late in the half.
With game tied at 34 at the half Wartburg made some defensive adjustments and clamped down on the UMM offense. They would hold the Cougars to just six made field goals in the second half and used a 21-7 run to go up 62-45 with just over six minutes left in the game, essentially icing the game.
The Cougars will now enjoy nearly a week off before they take on Mayville State in the final home game of the 2014 calendar year next Friday at 5:30 p.m.
