MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (5-10, 3-1 UMAC) fell 66-63 in overtime to Northland College (5-10, 1-3 UMAC) on Friday night, giving them their first loss in UMAC play. The Cougars had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation and tie the game at the buzzer in overtime but both efforts came up short.
Joe Roggenbuck led the way with 16 points and six rebounds for UMM.
The Cougars jumped out to an 11-2 lead on the Lumberjacks but that lead was quickly erased and the lead was down to one at 13-12 about three minutes later. Northland would tie the game at 17 but Morris did not give up the lead until the five minute mark of the first half. The Lumberjacks would have the lead for just over a minute in the first half. Morris led by eight as the clock wound down in the first half but a desperation shot by Northland cut the lead to five at the break.
Northland would tie the game for the second time, this time at 38, early in the second half. After trading buckets, the Cougars went on a 6-0 spurt to put them ahead 46-40. That lead would grow to ten with 7:36 left, their largest of the game but Northland wasn't done. They went on a 10-0 run that was stopped by
Neil Helgeson, hitting a three to give the Cougars a lead.
The Lumberjacks responded with a three of their own to tie the game at 58 with 3:04 left. Both teams then went cold, missing the rest of the way. The Cougars had a couple looks at the end of regulation but came up short and the game headed to overtime.
Helgeson gave the Cougars the lead early in the extra session scoring on the first possession. Northland would take a 66-62 lead with 1:42 left but
RJ Dean hit one of two free throws to make it one possession game again. Morris had a look to tie it with just over 30 seconds remaining but it wouldn't fall.
Northland had a chance to increase their lead at the line but missed and gave the Cougars the ball back. Unfortunately, UMM turned it over with six second left and things looked bleak. The Lumberjacks just needed to inbound the ball and ice the game away but UMM forced a five second violation giving them a chance. Northland chose not to foul and Helgeson had a good look from three but it came up just short and the Lumberjacks escaped with the win.
John Haseman finished the night with 14 points on 6-11 shooting. Helgeson added 12 as the third Cougar to get into double figures. Northland's bench helped them out a lot on Friday night, pouring in 25 points.
Minnesota Morris will look to rebound tomorrow night as they host St. Scholastica at 5 p.m.
