Cougars Erase First Half Deficit

MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (7-9, 5-0 UMAC) stayed perfect in the UMAC on Saturday with a 69-64 come from behind win against St. Scholastica (6-10, 3-2 UMAC). After trailing by six at the half, UMM started the second half on a 13-0 run, sparked by nine straight points from Kayla Kraemer. The Cougars would hold on to the lead and hit their free throws in the end to pull out the victory.
 
Emily Auch had 17 points, her second highest mark on the year to lead the offense. It was a physical game with a total of 51 free throws taken. St. Scholastica hit 21 and the Cougars hit 20.
 
Connor Lewis filled up the stat sheet scoring six points, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out seven assists and picking up two steals. Kendra Wycoff added 11 points and Cori Becker added ten including 3-3 from three point range.
 
St. Scholastica began the game on an 11-4 run forcing an early UMM timeout. The timeout worked the Cougars drew within two at 11-9. Scholastica pushed their lead back to six at 15-9 but a three from Maja Coomes cut the lead in half. Morris would tie the game at 18 and take their second lead of the game at 20-18. With the game tied at 24 the Saints would go on a 6-0 run and take a two possession lead. The Saints would go into the break with a 32-26 advantage.
 
The Saints got to the line in the first half and outscored UMM 11-4 at the line, proving to the difference in the opening 20 minutes.
 
Tori Holt started the second half run for UMM by hitting a pair of free throws. Kraemer would then hit back-to-back three's followed by a three point play to put Morris up 37-32. Auch would make the lead seven before Scholastica got on the board in the second half. The lead would shrink to three but Morris kept their lead and increased to seven once again.
 
With Morris leading 51-42, the Saints dug in and went on an 8-0 run cutting the UMM lead to just one. St. Scholastica tie the game at 53 and took a brief lead at 54-53 before Auch hit a layup to put UMM back in front. With just over four minutes to go Becker hit two straight from distance and the Cougars jumped out by seven. CSS once gain countered and scored six straight to make it 63-62 with two minutes left.
 
Minnesota Morris hit 5-6 from the foul line and grabbed an offensive rebound after a missed free throw to ice the game away late. The Cougars would win 69-64, picking up their 26thwin all-time against St. Scholastica. Morris converted 14 Saints turnovers into 20 offensive points, outscoring CSS in that category by ten.
