Cougars Win High Scoring Affair

MORRIS, Minn. – It took overtime but Minnesota Morris (3-2) held off Crown (1-6) 109-105. It is the second highest scoring game in Minnesota Morris school history, falling short of the record by nine points. CD Douglas tied a school record with 35 points in the game, tying three others.
 
Other 35 point games – Phil Allen vs St. Scholastica, Jan. 19, 2008, Brendan McNally vs North Central, Jan. 5 2007, and David Holler at Bemidji State, Feb. 22, 2003.
 
Highest scoring game: 223 points - 115-108 loss to Concordia University, St. Paul on December 14, 2004
 
It was the Austin VanDerHeyden show early for Crown, he scored nine of the team's 16 points in the first six minutes of play and the Storm led 16-9. Morris recovered and went on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes, taking a 22-18 lead. The game would go back and forth for the rest of the half but Crown would hold a four point advantage at the buzzer.
 
Minnesota Morris began the second half on an 11-3 run to take a four point lead over Crown. The Cougars kept up the pressure and led by as much as eight. Morris would keep the Storm at bay for most of the second half. Crown got as close as two at 81-69 but UMM held firm. Eventually the Storm would tie the game, doing so at 92 with a minute to play. Douglas gave the Cougars the lead back moments later but Crown answered with a pair of free throws with 35 seconds left. Joe Roggenbuck had a chance to win it for UMM in regulation but missed a pair of free throws with 1.7 seconds left on the clock.
 
The Cougars tried to put the game away early in overtime, starting off with a 9-0 run in the first two minutes. Crown would recover with a 9-2 scoring run, including six points by Seth Moan. The Storm had a chance to tie the game up with 16 seconds to play but the shot was off and the Cougars held on for the 109-105 victory.
 
Next up for UMM is a non-conference game with Saint John's on Monday night at 7 p.m. in the PE Center.
 
GAME NOTES:
  • The Cougars scored 66 points in the paint.
  • Crown had 20 second chance points.
  • Eight players, four on each team scored in double figures.
  • VanDerHeyden had a double-double at halftime and finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds.
  • Seth Moan had 40 points to lead all scorers.
  • Tyler Ukkelberg had a career high 22 points.
  • Anthony Fisher had a career high 14 points off the bench.
  • Morris started 18-23 from the foul line but ended 27-42 on the night.
  • The 27 made free throws was the most since making 30 against Saint John's in 2013.
  • There were eight ties and seven lead changes.
