ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (12-15) had their season come to an end on Saturday night falling 68-39 to the Northwestern Eagles (18-9). The Cougars were unable to turn Northwestern over in the game and the Eagles were on fire from three, hitting ten in the game.
Neil Helgeson led the Cougars with 12 points in the night, all coming in the first half.
CD Douglas added eight points and four rebounds. No other Cougar had more than four points on the night.
Northwestern jumped out to a 9-2 lead but the Cougars were able to settle in and went on a 6-0 run to pull within one by the 14 minute mark. The game stayed there for a couple minutes until Northwestern hit a three to back up by four. The Eagles pushed their lead back to ten before Morris got back on the board at 18-10.
Neil Helgeson kept the Cougars in it, scoring ten of the Cougars first 18 points. Northwestern stayed in the lead, holding a 27-18 lead with 5:30 left in the half. Northwestern continued to score on the offensive side of the ball and pushed their lead to 12.
The lead would get as large as 16 just before the half for the Eagles. Helgeson finished the half with 12 points; no other Cougars had more than four. The Eagles were 6-14 from three in the first half.
Minnesota Morris struggled out of the gate in the second half failing to score in the first six minutes as Northwestern increased their lead to 25. The Cougars never got any closer than 23 the rest of the way. Morris struggled from the line on the night, missing their first 11 attempts and finishing 4-14 from the line.
It is the end of the careers of
Neil Helgeson and
RJ Dean who both finish their college career with over 1,000 points each.
