ASHLAND, Wis. – Minnesota Morris (10-11, 8-2 UMAC) held Northland (8-13, 4-6 UMAC) to just 38.9% shooting on the night, picking up a 62-59 victory on Saturday night.
Joe Roggenbuck had a team high 13 points and eight rebounds.
John Haseman came off the bench to add nine points and seven rebounds.
CD Douglas also finished the game with nine points.
The Cougars also did not shoot the ball particularly well but did outshoot Northland by five percent and held a 7-5 advantage in three point field goals. The Lumberjacks took advantage of their opportunities at the line going 12-13 from the stripe.
Much like the Cougars contest with St. Scholastica, neither team was able to get much breathing room in the first half. With UMM trailing 25-23 and 5:02 on the clock, Northland went on a little run, scoring six straight to take an eight point lead. The lead got as large as nine in the first half but
Cody Emrick hit a three at the buzzer to make it 33-27 at the half in favor of the home team.
Morris began the second half on a 12-5 run to take a 39-38 lead after a jumper from
Tyler Ukkelburg. The Cougars kept pushing and took a 47-38 lead before forcing a Northland timeout. It took some time for the Lumberjacks to comeback but they pulled within three with 6:31 left. Morris would push their lead back to eight with 3:26 left after a jumper from Haseman.
Northland wasn't done and went on a 9-2 run, to cut the Cougars lead to one with 15 seconds left.
RJ Dean hit both free throws with 13 seconds left, giving UMM a three point lead. Northland got off a three point shot but it missed and UMM held on for the 62-59 victory.
With four games to play the Cougars hold a two game lead over St. Scholastica for the second spot in the UMAC. They trail Northwestern by two games for the number one spot in the league. Morris will need one more win to secure a spot in the UMAC Tournament this season.
