Morris Set for NCAA First Round

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Morris (16-11) will go for its first NCAA Tournament win since 1983 tomorrow night when the Cougars take on #2 St. Thomas (27-0) at 8 p.m. Morris will take the floor with five All-Conference players in search of knocking out the host Tommies.

The Cougars defense has been the spark as of late, turning opponents over and making them pay on the offensive side of the ball. In the UMAC Championship win Morris forced 23 turnovers and scored 18 points off them. That same squad will try to do that to a Tommie squad that averages 13.9 turnovers per contest.

Minnesota Morris can also produce the scoring to go along with their defense. Kendra Wycoff (UMAC Player of the Year, First Team All-UMAC), Emily Auch (UMAC Tournament MVP, UMAC First Team) and Tori Holt (UMAC Second Team) all average over ten points per game. In addition it is not just those three that fill up the score sheet. On the season nine different Cougars have scored ten points in a contest. On the season UMM is averaging 69.9 points per game, just two points less than the Tommies.

Both the Cougars and Tommies can fill it from deep, a statistic to keep an eye on tomorrow night. UMM averages 6.9 made three's per game and the UST averages 6.3 per game.

The winner of the contest will take on the winner of St. Norbert and Luther who open up the Regional play on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
