MORRIS, Minn. – The Cougars (11-11, 9-2 UMAC) bats were alive and well on Saturday, scoring 33 runs in eight trips to the plate on the day. Morris won game one 10-0 and 23-11 in game two over North Central (1-15, 0-11 UMAC).
Clare Hamer and
Gina Downie each had six RBI on the day.
GAME 1
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Hamer came to the plate and delivered a three run single to give UMM a 3-0 lead. She would get out the play trying to move to second which allowed the final run to score. The rally restarted and the Cougars scored three more times in the inning.
Autumn Mahoney,
Molly Olson and
Cassie Sowada all had RBI singles in the inning.
Minnesota Morris put up another crooked number up in the third, scoring four runs.
Emily Leeb got the scoring started with a RBI single up the middle. Downie tripled to left center driving in Leeb and Hamer. Downie scored the final run of the game scoring on a sac fly by Mahoney.
Starter
Mariah Essig got the win going four innings and allowing just two hits. She finished the game with eight strikeouts and no walks.
GAME 2
The second game of the doubleheader was an offensive explosion. Morris scored 12 times in the first inning and nine times in the second inning to leap to a 21-0 lead. Olson had a two run homer to start the scoring for UMM. Hamer had her second three run hit of the day, doubling in three Cougars with a ball to left center. Downie, Mahoney, Sowada,
Kallie Grote all added RBI hits in the inning.
Alex Anderson started the Cougars scoring in the second inning with an inside the park homer put UMM up 14-0. Morris tacked on seven more runs in the inning. Pomeroy had an RBI single before back-to-back bases loaded walks put the Cougars in front 18-0. Downie made it 21-0 with a single to right field, two runs scored via the single and then the third scored on an error by the right fielder.
North Central struck back in the third with a three run homer by the UMAC leader in batting average, Amanda Roth. The Rams would score four more runs in the top of the fourth making it 21-7.
Morris countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Anderson tripled in
Paige Larson and then scored on a single by Downie.
Roth had another homer in the top of the fifth as the Rams' offense scored four more runs, making the final 23-11.
