WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (4-10, 2-1 UMAC) split their two games on the first day of the UMAC Crossover in the West St. Paul Dome. The Cougars lost 10-3 to St. Scholastica before picking up a 9-3 win over Northland in the second game of the day.
vs St. Scholastica Errors hurt the Cougars in their game against the Saints, giving CSS six unearned runs in the top of the second inning. The score would stay 6-0 until
Molly Olson came to the plate and delivered a three run homer cutting the Saints lead to three.
St. Scholastica would get back on the board in the top of the sixth with a two out homer. They extended their lead in the seventh with a three run inning to take a commanding 10-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Morris could only manage one hit after the fourth inning and never got a runner past first base as they fell to the Saints.
vs Northland The Cougars got on the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Gina Downie led off with a single and scored on a two double off the bat of
Cassie Sowada. The LumberJills struck back in the top of the second scoring three runs, two unearned.
Minnesota Morris didn't trail long striking for three runs in the bottom of the third. Once again the inning started with a single by Downie. Another single followed; this one by
Autumn Mahoney. After a ground out moved runners to second and third, Sowada smacked a triple to drive in Downie and Mahoney. Sowada would score on a sacrifice by
Meghan Pomeroy.
In the fourth inning UMM batted through the lineup scoring three more runs and taking a 7-3 lead. The Cougars would take advantage of three Northland errors in the inning. Olson had the lone RBI in the inning with a RBI single to center. Two more errors in the fifth inning helped UMM push their lead to six. Again it was Olson who had the lone RBI in the inning, hitting a sac fly to score
Alex Anderson.
Tomorrow the Cougars take on North Central and Northwestern tomorrow afternoon in the same dome starting at 8:30 a.m.
