MORRIS, Minn. – Concordia-Moorhead (11-22) came to town and took two from the Minnesota Morris Cougars (14-16) on Thursday afternoon.
Molly Olson drove in three of the Cougars four runs in a 5-4 game one loss in 11 innings. The Cobbers rolled in game two winning 12-0 in five innings.
GAME 1
It was quiet start to game one as the two teams combined for just two hits, one each, in the first five innings of play. Neither team really threatened to score in those innings. That changed in the top of the sixth when Concordia took a 2-0 lead on three hits and an error. The error did not come back to hurt the Cougars but Morris trailed by a pair of runs after the half inning. In the bottom of the sixth Olson came to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third, she delivered for UMM singling down the line in left to drive in
Gina Downie and
Alex Anderson.
The game remained tied at two until the top of the tenth. A runner was placed on second base with nobody out in each half inning the rest of the way.
The Cobbers went up 3-2 on a one out single through the left side.
Emily Leeb kept UMM alive after driving in
Paige Larson with one out. Concordia again scored in the eleventh, but this time they were able to score twice. A throwing error by Morris allowed the second run of the inning to score. The Cougars would get the runner in from second to make it a one run game and had runners on first and second with one out. Unfortunately a fielder's choice and a pop up to short ended the threat and the game.
GAME 2
It was all Concordia in the second game of the double header. The Cobbers took advantage of some UMM fielding mistakes in the first inning to score four unearned runs on two hits and two errors. Morris threatened in the bottom of the inning but left the bases loaded. Concordia tacked on two more runs in the second inning giving them a 6-0 lead.
Morris managed a hit in the second and third innings but could not get on the board. Moorhead would score twice more in the fourth making it 8-0. The Cougars loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but again left them packed full. The game got out of hand in the fifth when Moorhead scored four runs pushing their lead to 12.
The Cougars are home for the final time in 2015 on Saturday when they host Bethany Lutheran starting at 1 p.m. It will be senior night for the Cougars.
