ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (17-17, 15-6 UMAC) wrapped up the two seed in the UMAC Tournament with a pair of wins on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars won 4-3 in come from behind fashion against Martin Luther. In the second game of the day Morris beat Bethany Lutheran 3-0 after a great start from
Mackenzie Weatherly.
VS MLC
Martin Luther jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning of play. In the inning the Knights had just one hit and two walks but took the lead. Morris would get on the board in the third inning. The inning started with a pair of singles. A sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third with one out.
Autumn Mahoney singled through the left side driving in
Alex Anderson and
Paige Larson, bringing the Cougars within one.
The game slowed down over the next few innings as the pitching took over. Morris still trailed by one with only six outs to play with. In the bottom of the sixth inning the Cougars put a runner on third with nobody out.
Meghan Pomeroy came to the plate and put a ball over the fence in left giving the Cougars a 4-3 lead. Minnesota Morris held on for the 4-3 victory as
Mariah Essig put MLC down in order in the seventh. Essig went all seven innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out three.
VS BLC
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel. Mackenzie Weather threw six no hit innings to earn the win.
Erin Kvam came in to start the seventh and earned her second save of the season. Bethany's pitcher was nearly as good going all seven innings and allowing just five hits and one earned run.
Morris had just one hit through five innings of play but got on the board in the sixth.
Alex Anderson started the inning with a single and stole second to move into scoring position.
Gina Downie advanced her to third and she would score on Mahoney's single a batter later.
The Cougars added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh taking advantage of a BLC throwing error.
Gina Downie drove in the Cougars third run of the game to give UMM a 3-0 lead. The Vikings threatened in the seventh, putting runners on first and third with two outs but the threat ended when
Molly Olson threw out the runner trying to steal second.
Minnesota Morris will play Northwestern at 10 a.m. on Friday morning to begin the UMAC Tournament.
