Morris Comes Up Short in UMAC Championship

DULUTH, Minn. – The Cougars (19-19) UMAC Tournament ride ended with a pair of defeats on Saturday to St. Scholastica (31-14). Morris was 2-0 going into the day and had already secured a spot in the UMAC Championship game, needing one win to advance to the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, the Saints went 3-0 on the day, eliminating the Cougars.

GAME 1

St. Scholastica scored in the bottom of the first, putting UMM behind the eight ball quickly. Morris threatened to score in the second and third inning but could not get a runner from home in either inning, leaving a pair of runners on base each time. The Saints added to their lead in the third, tacking on a second run.

Morris again threatened in the fourth this time loading the bases up, but it all came with two outs and the Saints got out of the jam. Scholastica would double their lead in the fourth, going up 4-0. Morris continued their search for the big hit but it never game. They would end the game with 12 runners left on base despite only four hits. Scholastica would go on to win 6-0 and forced a winner take all game for the UMAC Tournament Championship.

GAME 2

A solo homer put the Saints up 1-0 in the bottom of the first once again putting the pressure on the Cougars. They would double that lead in the bottom of the second with a RBI double. Morris cut into that lead in the third when Molly Olson doubled down the line in left, driving in Autumn Mahoney.

The Cougars had a chance to tie it in the fourth but could not get the runner in from second. The offenses for both teams hibernated for the next few innings and the game stayed 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth. That is when the Saints put the game away, scoring three runs and taking a 5-1 lead.

Morris finishes with at least 19 wins for the fourth straight season.
