ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – It was big road win for Minnesota Morris (8-9, 4-5 UMAC) as they beat Crown (2-16, 0-9 UMAC) 65-57. Four Cougars scored in double figures, led by
Elli Stevenson's 17 points.
Cori Becker,
Kendra Raths and
Tori Holt also finished in double figures.
Crown was able to stay with the Cougars thanks to 24 points from their bench. The game featured nine ties and six games. Morris forced 17 turnovers, resulting in 21 points.
Morris jumped out 5-0 on the Storm but the lead did not last long. Crown took their first lead of the game at 10-8. There wasn't much more scoring in the quarter and Crown led 14-12 at the break.
Becker gave the Cougars a 15-14 lead with a three early in the second quarter. Morris would extend that lead to six after a three from
Maja Coomes. Crown would respond, going on 7-0 run, and took a 21-20 lead. Morris recovered and ended the half by outscoring the Storm 8-3 and taking a 28-24 halftime lead.
The Cougars tried to take control of the game in the third quarter. They held Crown without a point for the first 3:24 of the half, taking an 11 point lead at 35-24. Unfortunately, Morris could not hold the lead and Crown would tie the game at 39.
The game moved to the fourth quarter and UMM held a slight advantage at 42-39. Crown tied the game at 42 after both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes to start the quarter. Morris scored the next eight points of the game to go up 50-42 with 4:46 left. Crown never got closer than six the rest of the way and the Cougars came away with a 65-57 victory.
Next week Morris will try to improve their conference standing when they welcome Northwestern and North Central to the P.E. Center.
