Cougars lose high-scoring affair in Mayville

MAYVILLE, N.D. - Two nights after an exhilarating season-opening win, the Minnesota Morris men's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season and lost a high-scoring, 92-85 contest at Mayville State Thursday night.

It was a topsy-turvy first half with both teams holding substantial leads. Back-to-back baskets from Tyler Ukkelberg gave the Cougars a 15-8 lead a little more than eight minutes into the game. The Comets would counter with an 18-6 spurt to take a 26-21 edge with 6:31 left in the half. A CD Douglas lay-in ended a 7-0 Cougar run to give UMM a 2-point edge. Mayville would take a 1-point lead at 34-33 into halftime.

Prior to the arrival of the cold, snowy weather Thursday night, both teams came out of the locker room hot in the second half. The Cougars shot 56 percent in the game's second 20 minutes, but the Comets were slightly better at 58 percent as they outscored the Cougars 58-52 in the second half to gain the seven-point victory.

Six minutes into the second half, the Cougars used back-to-back 3s from Dylan Erickson and Nick Peterson and a jumper from Douglas to take a 53-46 edge with 12:51 left. Mayville countered with eight straight to retake their one-point advantage. Erickson followed with another 3 to give UMM a 56-54 lead. The back-and-forth contest would end after the Comets followed Erickson's 3 with a 3 of their own to gain back the advantage and would extend their lead throughout the ten minutes.

Douglas led four Cougars in double figures with 22 points. Ukkelberg recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. John Haseman had a near double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. Erickson added 12 points.

Minnesota Morris (1-1) is back on the road for a contest Saturday at Saint John's.
