Cougars pull away in second half for third straight win

MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris turned a one-point halftime deficit into an eight-point, 83-75, win Saturday over Crown in UMAC men's basketball action Saturday at Jim Gremmels Court.

Trailing 37-36 at halftime, the Cougars scored the first ten points of the second half to take a 46-37 edge. Four different Cougars scored in the stretch, including a John Haseman lay-in to end the spurt.

In their last game against Martin Luther, Jeremy Halverson caught fire in the second half making four 3s in a matter of minutes. Saturday, he drained three 3s in a two-minute spurt to help maintain a 10-point lead. Halverson made six 3s in 10 tries on the afternoon on his way to a team-high 18 points. He also pulled down nine rebounds and recorded two blocks.

Tyler Ukkelberg gave Minnesota Morris their biggest lead at 73-62 following a rare four-point play with 2:43 left in the game.

Crown would not go away though and pulled within four at 77-73 after their own four-point play from Timothy Wendel with 1:12 to go. Wendel led all scorers with 27 points.

Haseman hit a jumper and CD Douglas connected on all four free throws down the stretch to ensure Crown would not get any closer.

Free throw shooting was key for the Cougars as they made 19-of-22 in the second half. Douglas was 14-for-15 from the line for the game on his way to 16 points. He added 10 rebounds and five assists for another double-double effort. Ukkelberg joined Douglas with 16 points. Haseman added 13 points.

Minnesota Morris (7-3, 3-1 in UMAC) stays at home for their next contest, January 3, against Presentation.
