MORRIS, Minn. – Minnesota Morris (14-12) could not hold a 13 point fourth quarter lead and Martin Luther (13-13) rallied to upset the Cougars 67-66 thanks to a late layup. The Knights outscored the Cougars 46-24 in the paint, thanks to 16 points from Jade St. Germaine. The Cougars were led by
Tori Holt who had 16 points.
Kayla Kraemer added 13 points including three made three point field goals.
In the first quarter Morris shot 8-16 from the field and the Cougars led 18-10 at the break. Holt had nine points on 4-4 shooting in the quarter. The Cougars ended the quarter on a 14-6 run.
Martin Luther would go inside in the second quarter and it paid off. The Knights scored 14 of their 19 points in the paint during the quarter. They would cut the Cougars lead to just three by the halftime break.
Morris tried to take back control in the third quarter. They got six points from their bench and five second chance points while outscoring the Knights 22-17 in the quarter. An 8-2 run to end the quarter gave the Cougars an eight point lead at 54-46.
Elli Stevenson had seven points and
Maja Coomes added six during the quarter.
The lead would extend to 13 when
Mauren Thiesen hit a three with 7:29 left in the game. The Knights would respond with a 9-0 run, cutting UMM's lead to just four. A steal and fast break layup by Grace Schultz made it a one possession game with 1:26 left. The Cougars turned the ball over on the next possession and an intentional foul was called giving MLC a pair of free throws and the ball.
Leah Nass hit both free throws and then converted a layup on the ensuing possession, giving the Knights a 65-64 lead. Stevenson connected on a runner giving Morris a 66-65 lead with 24 seconds remaining. Martin Luther went back inside on their final possession and St. Germane made a layup with less than eight seconds putting MLC back on top. The Cougars got a final shot off but it hit back iron and Martin Luther left Morris with a 67-66 win.
