MOORHEAD, Minn. – Concordia College (13-5) used early runs in both games on Sunday to sweep the Minnesota Morris (2-16) Cougars 6-2 and 5-3. The Cobbers scored four runs in the first inning during game one and four runs in the first two innings in game two.
Gina Downie,
Autumn Mahoney,
Paige Larson and
Lacey Sullivan each had a pair of hits in the first game of the double header. Larson and Sullivan drove in the Cougar runs for Morris. After four first inning runs the Cougars got a run in the top of the third. Concordia responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Morris would pick up a run in the fourth but could not get any closer.
Minnesota Morris was held to just five hits in the second game of the day but scored three times. The Cougars went up 1-0 in the first thanks to a Cobber error. Concordia-Moorhead would tie it in the bottom of the inning and then scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead.
Sullivan brought the Cougars within one in the third inning with a two run double. A two out rally in the fourth inning put the Cobbers up 5-3. Morris threatened in the top of the sixth but left the bases loaded and had a runner thrown out at the plate. The Cougars nearly scored in the seventh inning as well but a strikeout ended that threat and the game.
Minnesota Morris will host St. Scholastica tomorrow afternoon in the UMAC opener. The UMAC Game of the Week doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
