NEW ULM, Minn. - Minnesota Morris scored the game's first 11 points and never looked back in winning their fifth straight game, 85-63, Friday night at Martin Luther in UMAC women's basketball action.
Kendra Raths' first shot of the game told the story of how well the Cougars would shoot for the game. Her 3 from the top of the key banked in and it got Minnesota Morris rolling from the get-go. Raths later drained another 3 to be followed by a
Mauren Thiesen 3 that gave the Cougars an early 11-0 edge. Martin Luther would find their shot as well and pulled within 20-15 after one quarter.
Within the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Cougars built their lead back to double digits with the help of a 12-2 run. Another Raths 3 made it 29-17 and
Elli Stevenson followed with a shot of deep to make it 32-17. By the end of the first half,
Abby Van Kempen and
Courtney Dague helped give the Cougars their biggest lead of the game of 18 at 47-29.
Just like in the first two quarters, Minnesota Morris started the third with another impressive spurt, outscoring the Knights 14-5 to take a 61-34 lead 3:36 into the stanza. Thiesen was the catalyst in the spurt as she scored eight points in just over a minute. The Cougars would not be threatened the rest of the way.
All four of Rath's made baskets were from behind-the-arc as she scored 14 points.Thiesen was 6-for-8 from the floor on her way to 15 points. She shared team-high scoring honors with
Bailey Miller who was 7-for-13 from the floor. Stevenson had 12 points and Van Kempen recorded another double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
