MANKATO, Minn. -
Noah Grove poured in seven first half 3s as he combined with
CD Douglas to score 41 of the Cougars 63 first half points Saturday evening and Minnesota Morris downed Bethany Lutheran 100-91 in UMAC men's basketball action in Mankato.
Grove and Douglas combined to shoot 15-for-20 from the floor in the first half as well as 10-for-12 from behind the arc to help the Cougars build a 63-49 halftime advantage. The Cougars shot 59 percent in the opening 20 minutes which included making 14 of 21 tries from 3-point range.
Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first half making it tough for Minnesota Morris to pull away early on. They began to pull away with 12 minutes left in the half. Leading 24-23, the Cougars went on a 12-2 run to take their first double-digit lead of the contest. Grove,
Tyler Ukkelberg, and
Jeremy Halverson all hit 3s during the stretch that gave UMM a 36-25 edge. The lead would stay between 7 and 12 points the rest of the half before Grove hit a step back 3 from the right corner in the final seconds to give the Cougars their biggest lead at 14 going into the locker room.
The defense picked up for both squads in the second half with shooting percentages drastically lower than in the first 20 minutes. Minnesota Morris shot just 26 percent in the second half, but Bethany could not take advantage of that in their comeback attempt and shot slightly better at 29 percent.
Douglas hit another 3 early on in the second half to give the Cougars their biggest lead at 15 at 66-51. With both teams struggling to make shots, Minnesota Morris' lead would stay between 10-15 points for the majority of the half. The Vikings did cut the deficity to 6 in the final minute, but Ukkelberg and Halverson made free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
Grove ended up with a career-high 31 points. Douglas was 10-for-16 from the floor on his way to 25 points. Halverson scored 13 and Ukkelberg had a double-double effort with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Minnesota Morris (11-9, 6-5 in UMAC) heads on the road next Saturday for a game at Crown.
