NEW ULM, Minn. - Minnesota Morris topped the century mark for the second straight game as they defeated Martin Luther, 103-79, Wednesday night in UMAC men's basketball action in New Ulm.
The Cougars tied a program high in the UMACÂ era with 120 points in their last outing against North Central. They appeared to be set on reaching that mark again as they raced out to a 24-12 lead just seven minutes into the contest. 18 of those 24 points came via the 3.
Noah Grove drained three 3s in the stretch with
CD Douglas,
Jeffrey Halverson, and
Jeremy Halverson each connecting from long range.
Martin Luther scored ten straight to pull within 2 after the impressive Cougar start, but UMM countered with 5 straight to go back up by 7.
Jeremy Halverson hit twice from 3-point range to help get the Cougar lead back into double-digits. The advantage got as high as 15 as the Cougars would take a 51-39 lead going into halftime.
UMM started the second half on an 18-6 run to get the lead over 20 for the first time. Douglas' 3 put the Cougars up 69-45 seven minutes into the half. The Cougars would not be threatened again as they gained the 24-point victory.
The Cougars shot over 50 percent from the floor for the second straight game as they connected on 56 percent of their shots (37-for-66) and 52 percent of their 3-point shots (12-for-23).
Douglas led the way offensively with 33 points on 12-for-16 shooting from the floor. Grove had a near triple-double with 26 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists.
Jeffrey Halverson and
Jeremy Halverson went for 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Minnesota Morris (6-8, 5-1 in UMAC) returns home to face Northland Saturday at 3 p.m. at Jim Gremmels Court.
