MORRIS, Minn. - Minnesota Morris built a double-digit first quarter and did not look back in defeated Northland, 76-52, Saturday afternoon in UMAC women's basketball action at Jim Gremmels Court.
Becca Holland and
Elli Stevenson sparked an 11-2 run to get the Cougars out of an early hole. A Holland 3 put the Cougars up 1. Holland drained another 3 as Stevenson scored the other five points in the spurt that gave UMM a 17-8 advantage. Later a 9-0 Cougar run gave them a 26-11 lead. Stevenson connected from long range and
Abby Van Kempen added a pair of baskets. The Cougars took a 26-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Cougars led by as many 26 points in the fourth quarter and they maintained a double figures lead throughout the final three stanzas.
In their last game, the Cougars held Martin Luther to 11 percent shooting in the second half. Their defense was stifling again against the Lumberjills. They held Northland to 24 percent shooting from the floor (7-for-29) in the second 20 minutes.
Stevenson led all scorers with 22 points and dished out seven assists.
Bailey Miller had 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting.
Mauren Thiesen added 13 and Van Kempen pulled down 11 rebounds.
Minnesota Morris (5-10, 5-2 in UMAC) next plays Northwestern Wednesday in St. Paul.
