MORRIS, Minn. - On a day where
CD Douglas was honored pregame, the senior guard would pour in 30 points to help the Minnesota Morris top Wisconsin-Superior, 75-63, Saturday afternoon in UMAC men's basketball action at Jim Gremmels Court.
Douglas received a commemorative game ball before the game as earlier this season, he became the second Cougar in program history to surpass 1,500 career points. He proved to the home crowd Saturday that he is indeed an elite scorer as he reached 30 points for the third time this season and has scored at least 20 in six straight contests.
The Cougars raced out to a quick 10-2 lead as
Jeremy Halverson both started and ended a 10-0 spurt with 3s. Douglas gave the Cougars their first double-digit edge at 23-12 with a jumper with 11:22 left in the first.
Jeffrey Halverson gave the Cougars their biggest edge in the first half when he nailed a 3 that made it 32-17 with 7:16 left. The Yellowjackets were able to pull within single digits by half's end as the Cougars lead 39-32 going into the locker room.
Two plays into the second half, the Cougars were back up by double digits as back-to-back lay-ins from
Trey Heinsuis gave UMM a 43-32 lead. UWS pulled within 6 at 57-51 with 6:50 remaining, but a Cougar 9-0 spurt regained their comfortable edge. Douglas scored seven of the nine points in the run as he missed just four shots from the floor for the game (12-for-16).
Three other Cougars scored in double figures.
Jeffrey Halverson recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Jeremy Halverson tallied 13 points and Heinsuis added 12.
Minnesota Morris (8-9, 7-2 in UMAC) now sits in a three-way tie for first place in the conference. They head out of conference for their next game, Tuesday at Trinity Bible College.
