Stevenson breaks 1,000 points in Loss to Bennies

Morris, Minn. -The University of Minnesota-Morris women's basketball team battled to the end, but ultimately fell short in their regular-season home opener to the College of St. Benedict Bennies 52-45 inside the PE Center.

The Cougars started the game off with a 5-point lead. Playing strong defensively in the first half, Morris held St. Benedict to a 29.9 field goal percentage and forced numerous turnovers. St. Benedict continued to build on their lead in the second quarter, expanding to a 36-22 lead at the half.

The Cougars fought hard to catch up, overcoming a 14-point deficit when Abby Van Kempen made two consecutive free throws in the third quarter and to make it a 32-32 game. It was a strong showing for the junior as she led the Cougars with 12 points. She also had eight rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. The Bennies pulled ahead at the end of the third quarter and continued to grow their lead until the final buzzer.
