Cougars win sixth straight in road win at NCU

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Five Cougars scored in double figures and two recorded double-doubles as Minnesota Morris won their sixth straight game with a 79-66 win Saturday over North Central in UMAC women's basketball action in Minneapolis.

The Cougars trailed North Central, 24-17, after the first quarter. A little over two minutes into the second, a Mauren Thiesen 3 cut the deficit to 2 at 27-25. Later, a Kendra Raths 3-point play gave UMM their first lead of the contest at 35-32 with 4:02 remaining in the first half. NCU scored five straight to regain the edge. A Bailey Miller 3-point play gave UMM a 40-37 lead and they would take a slim, 43-42, lead into halftime.

Minnesota Morris used a big third quarter to gain control of the game. Back-to-back 3s from Elli Stevenson and Thiesen started a Cougar 17-2 spurt that gave them a 62-46 lead with 1:41 left in the third. They outscored the Rams, 19-8, in the third to take a 62-50 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Rams pulled within 7 on a couple of occasions, but that was all the closer they would get.

Stevenson led the Cougars with 23 points while going 13-for-14 from the free throw line. Abby Van Kempen scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Frontcourt mate, Raths, added a double-double of her own with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Thiesen scored 13 while Miller added 11.

Minnesota Morris (11-12, 10-4 in UMAC) hosts Northwestern Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for senior night.
