MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets (17-17, 14-2 UMAC) topped the University of Minnesota Morris softball team (16-20, 6-10 UMAC) twice (3-0 & 5-3) on Friday. Friday's doubleheader was Senior Day for the Cougars.
Game One Recap
Both defenses held their own in the first game as the two teams combined for just 10 hits, with the Yellowjackets holding the 6-4 advantage.
After two innings of scoreless play, the Yellowjackets got on the board with a solo homer in the top of the third. UWS then add a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 3-0.
The Yellowjackets were able to keep the Cougars in check down the stretch to secure the 3-0 victory.
Game Two Recap
Unlike the slow start in the first game, UWS scored twice in the first and second to take a 4-0 lead. The Yellowjackets then scored a run in the top of the fourth, which the Cougars countered in the bottom of the inning. For the Cougars in the fourth, Emily Nordquist tripled to right field to score Allison Pohlmann.
The Cougars then tacked on two runs in the fifth as Kallie Wycoff doubled down the left field line to score Becca Holland. Following Wycoff's double, Marissa Allen singled up the middle to score Megan Knickerbocker to get within two at 5-3. UWS allowed just two hits over the final two innings to pick up the 5-3 win.
The Cougars enter the UMAC Softball Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play on Thursday, May 2, at 10 a.m. in Mankato, Minnesota.
