Softball Splits Doubleheader at Crown

Cougars win 10-2, lose 4-3

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris softball team (10-12, 1-3 UMAC) split a pair of games against Crown (7-13, 1-3 UMAC) Friday afternoon. The Cougars took the opener by a score of 10-2 before falling 4-3 in the twin bill finale.

For the Cougar offense, Lydia Mann recorded five RBI in the doubleheader, which included a four-RBI outing in the opener.  

Game One Recap (Six Innings)

The Cougar offense got things going from the get-go, as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. In the opening inning, a Lacey Sullivan single scored the first run of the game and then Mann scored three runs on a single to make it 4-0.

Minnesota Morris then tacked on two more runs in the top of second on a two-RBI single from freshman Marissa Allen to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead. After an RBI double to left field in the top of the third from Kallie Wycoff, Crown scored twice in the bottom of the third to bring the score within five at 7-2.

Allen then led off the top of the fourth with her fifth career home run to give the Cougars an 8-2 lead. The game remained at 8-2 in favor of the Cougars until the top of the sixth when Mann doubled to right field to add two more RBI to her name. Minnesota Morris was able to keep the Storm in check during the bottom of the sixth to secure the 10-2 win.

Freshman Mollie Dummer allowed just two runs and struck out four in the complete game victory.

Game Two Recap (Eight Innings)

The Storm wasted little time to get on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the first to take the 1-0 lead.

Minnesota Morris then responded with three runs on three hits in the top of the second to make it a 3-1 contest. For the Cougars in the second, Mann singled down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1 and then Becca Holland scored Mann with a single to center. The Cougars then scored the third run of the inning on a passed ball.

Crown made it a one-run game with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Minnesota Morris was unable to hold off Crown in the seventh and the Storm sent the game to extra innings with a run on a two-out single to center field. Crown then scored once again in the bottom of the eighth to take game two of the doubleheader.

The Cougars are back in action on Saturday, April 6, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, against North Central. The doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
