MORRIS, Minn. – Senior Abby Van Kempen became the 24th Cougar in program history to score 1,000 career points Saturday as the UMN Morris women's basketball team (10-9, 5-5 UMAC) dropped a 70-63 contest to UW-Superior (13-6, 9-2 UMAC). Van Kempen finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Needing just two points to reach the 1,000-point plateau, Van Kempen missed her first shot of the game, but with 1:53 remaining in the first quarter her second shot attempt was good, giving her the milestone.
- The two teams opened the game trading baskets as the game remained with two points for the first 6:27 of action.
- With 1:09 to go in the first quarter, Marissa Ruiz made hit a 3-pointer to give the Yellowjackets a 10-point lead at 24-14.
- After Haley Wollschlager made a pair of free throws late, the Yellowjackets held a 24-16 lead after the first quarter.
- Van Kempen brought the Cougars within four points on a free throw at 24-20, but the Yellowjackets held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second quarter.
- With two quarters of play in the books, UW-Superior held a 41-29 lead over UMN Morris.
- The Yellowjackets continued to control the pace of play as the built a 15-point over the Cougars with 3:26 to go in the third.
- UW-Superior held a 56-44 lead over UMN Morris with one quarter to go.
- The Cougars then trailed by double-digits for the majority of the fourth quarter as they weren't able to bring the deficit to single-digits until 1:14 to play in regulation. UW-Superior held off the Cougars down the stretch en route to the 70-63 victory.

- Van Kempen recorded her fifth double-double of the season.
- Van Kempen tied a season-high 20 points.
- Mia Wassink finished the game with 19 points and nine rebounds.
- Wassink has scored in double-figures in 18 of 19 games this season.
