Cougars Win Regular Season Finale

Women's basketball defeats North Central, 92-76

MINNEAPOLIS – The UMN Morris women's basketball team (16-9, 11-5 UMAC) closed out its 2019-20 regular season slate with a 92-76 over North Central (12-14, 8-8 UMAC) Saturday afternoon. Mia Wassink recorded her seventh game with at least 20 points this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars scored the first four points of the game held the lead until North Central made it a 17-16 contest with 3:05 to go in the first.
  • With five seconds to go in the first quarter, Lexie Winter connected on a layup to make it 25-20 heading into the second quarter.
  • Despite trailing by seven early in the second, North Central took a two-point lead at 33-31 with 3:04 remaining in the opening half.
  • Freshman Jadyn Sondrol knocked down a pair of free throws with just one second left to give the Cougars a 43-49 lead going into halftime.
  • During the third quarter, UMN Morris outscored North Central by eight to make it a 74-62 contest with 10 minutes to play.
  • The Cougars opened the fourth quarter on an 11-1 run to take an 85-63 with 6:35 remaining in the game.
  • UMN Morris kept the game out of reach from North Central en route to the 92-76 victory.

NOTABLES

  • Sondrol tallied a career-best 16 points.
  • Van Kempen tallied a pair of blocks and now is two blocks away from setting the school record for career blocks (201).

UP NEXT
The Cougars will host North Central on Monday, Feb. 24, in the quarterfinal round of the UMAC Tournament. Game time is set for 7 p.m. inside the Cougar Sports Center.
