Slow Start Sinks Cougars against UW-Oshkosh

Facing a nationally-ranked Titans squad, the Cougars couldn’t buy a bucket in the first quarter and could never make up the gap.

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, ranked No. 17 in the D3sports.com preseason poll, by a score of 82-31 on Saturday afternoon at the College of Saint Benedict. The loss sends the Cougars to 1-2 on the young season.

The first quarter was nightmarish for Minnesota Morris. The Cougars shot 1-of-14 from the field and trailed, 19-0, before Lexus Eagle Chasing knocked in a three-pointer to get the team on the board. The opening frame ended with UW-Oshkosh holding a 23-3 lead.

The second quarter was better from the Cougars, but UW-Oshkosh still was able to extend its lead out to 45-18 at the half. Haley Wollschlager had seven of her team-high 11 points in the quarter, including a three-pointer just before the buzzer.

The poor shooting from the first quarter returned in the second half for Minnesota Morris, with the Cougars shooting just 5-of-22 from the floor after the break. The Titans extended their lead by 12 to 63-24 after three and then outscored UMN Morris by 12 again in the fourth quarter.

Wollschlager was the only Cougar to reach double-figures and she shot 5-of-7 from the field on her way to all-tournament honors. Ella Van Kempen added six points and Eagle Chasing finished with five.

Minnesota Morris begins a stretch of seven straight contests against non-Division III opposition on Thursday, Nov. 18 when the Cougars travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. to face Augustana University at 7 p.m.
