Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game at Nationally-Ranked Dakota State

The Cougars outscored the Trojans in the second half, but that came on the heels of a big halftime deficit.

MADISON, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to a Dakota State University squad ranked nationally in the NAIA. The Trojans took a 91-49 win over the Cougars to drop UMN Morris to 1-7 on the season.

The opening minute of the game saw Dakota State jump out to a 3-0 lead on its opening possession before Lexus Eagle Chasing stuck with it and score a second-chance bucket to make it 3-2. The Trojans followed with a 10-0 run before Malory Anderson hit a pair at the line. DSU locked the Cougars down much of the way the rest of the first quarter, jetting out to a 29-7 lead after 10 minutes.

The second quarter got even worse for Minnesota Morris as Dakota State needed just two minutes to score the first 10 points of the frame. Though Anderson scored seven points in the quarter for the Cougars, the Trojans took a 63-18 edge into halftime.

Haley Wollschlager knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter and Anderson tacked on another five points, but Minnesota Morris was unable to cut into the deficit, trailing by a score of 83-31 heading into the fourth.

The Cougars got rolling in the final 10 minutes, outscoring Dakota State by a score of 18-8 in the quarter. Justine Day provided six points in the quarter and Jadyn Sondrol had five as Minnesota Morris closed the gap slightly by game's end.
