DULUTH, Minn. – Both
Lexus Eagle Chasing and
Jadyn Sondrol approached double-doubles on Saturday to lead the University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team to a 75-59 non-conference victory over the College of St. Scholastica. The Cougars improve to 2-2 overall on the season heading back into UMAC action on Monday night.
It was a wire-to-wire win for UMN Morris, with a layup from
Jay Kwateh just a few seconds into the contest kicking off a 9-2 run. Consecutive baskets from
Malory Anderson, including a three-pointer, extended the lead to 18-9 later in the quarter before St. Scholastica cut it to seven through 10 minutes of play.
Minnesota Morris opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run capped by a triple from Sondrol to make it 27-11. The Saints were able to cut into the gap after that thanks in part to some sloppy passages of play from the Cougars. St. Scholastica got as close as five before halftime as UMN Morris committed 17 turnovers in the opening half. A fast-break layup from Eagle Chasing just before the buzzer gave the Cougars a 36-27 edge at the intermission.
St. Scholastica tallied the first bucket of the third quarter to once again trim the deficit to seven, but Minnesota Morris cleaned up its play in the second half and gradually pulled away. A 12-4 run from the Cougars over the final 4:13 of the third quarter pushed the lead out to 57-41.
The fourth quarter was largely a free-throw contest and Minnesota Morris did enough to keep St. Scholastica at bay. The Cougars knocked down 10-of-16 at the charity stripe in the final frame. The Saints were able to close the gap, but never got closer than 12 points as UMN Morris eased to victory.
Eagle Chasing led all scorers on the afternoon with 25 points and also tied for game-high honors in rebounds with nine. Sondrol had 13 points and eight boards.
Haley Wollschlager also hit double-figures with 10 points. Kwateh chipped in nine points and had five steals.
The Cougars return to UMAC play on Monday night, making up a contest at Martin Luther College that was postponed two weeks ago due to weather. The game in New Ulm tips off at 7 p.m.
