Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Balanced Effort Leads Women’s Basketball to Road Win at UW-Superior

The Cougars had four players in double figures on Saturday and six with at least eight points in the contest.

SUPERIOR, Wis. – There have been times this season when Lexus Eagle Chasing has had to take on too much of the scoring load for the University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team. On Saturday that was not the case. The Cougars put four players in double figures, had six players score at least eight points, and had every player who entered the contest convert at least one bucket in a 76-64 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The victory puts the Cougars at 5-3 (3-3 UMAC) for the season and clinches at least one home game for the team in the upcoming UMAC Tournament.

Minnesota Morris jumped out in front of UW-Superior early in the first quarter. Trailing 6-4, the Cougars went on an 11-0 run with five different players scoring during that stretch. An Ella Van Kempen basket in the final seconds of the quarter made it 17-13 after one.

The second quarter is when UMN Morris really took command. The lead grew as high as 17 points after a Lexie Winter triple and a layup from Eagle Chasing made it 34-17. An 18-10 edge in the quarter put the Cougars on top, 35-23, at the half.

The Yellow Jackets made a push early in the third quarter, getting within six points on a pair of occasions. The last time came at 40-34 with under six minutes left in the frame, but Malory Anderson scored a second-chance layup to help push the lead back to double-digits and a Haley Wollschlager three-pointer at the buzzer made it 58-44 with 10 minutes to play.

That three from Wollschlager was the start of a 9-0 run as the fourth quarter got underway. The lead peaked at 64-44 with less than eight minutes left. UW-Superior fought back and got the Minnesota Morris lead back under 10, but the clock was in the Cougars' favor and they were able to run out the clock while holding a comfortable margin.

Van Kempen and Wollschlager tied for the team high with 14 points on the afternoon. Eagle Chasing scored 10 of her 13 in the first half to help Minnesota Morris establish its early lead. Anderson came off the bench to add 11. Both Jay Kwateh and Jadyn Sondrol added eight points apiece. Maddie Fenske chipped in with five.

The UMAC regular season will conclude on Monday with a pair of matchups. Seeds and pairings will be finalized after the conclusion of those games. The Cougars have now been paired with the University of Northwestern for a non-conference game here at Jim Gremmels Court on Monday night starting at 7 p.m.
