Softball Drops a Pair to St. Scholastica

The Cougars opened up 2021 at the Dundas Dome on Friday night with losses to the Saints by scores of 11-0 and 2-1.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team played their first doubleheader of 2021 on Friday night, falling to the College of St. Scholastica in two very different fashions, first by a score of 11-0 in five innings and then in extra innings by a tally of 2-1.

The Cougars will next head to Plymouth, Minn. for a doubleheader with Concordia College (Minn.) on March 5 starting at 11 a.m.

Game One: St. Scholastica 11, Minnesota Morris 0 (5 innings)
St. Scholastica had the first turn at the plate in the opener and took advantage, plating three runs before the Minnesota Morris had a crack on offense. Faced with the early deficit, the Cougars could never get anything going against Haley Rosenthal, who improved to 3-0 on the season while striking out five and limiting UMN Morris to a single hit in the game – a two-out single from Morgan Mathews in the bottom of the second.

The Saints grew the lead with one run in both the second and third innings before blowing the game open with three-run frames in the fourth and fifth. Grace Penke suffered the loss for Minnesota Morris, going to 0-1 to start the year.

Game Two: St. Scholastica 2, Minnesota Morris 1 (8 innings)
The second game of the twinbill was a pitcher's duel between Minnesota Morris' Mollie Dummer and St. Scholastica's Olivia Howe. Though the Cougars ended up outhitting the Saints in the game, 4-3, St. Scholastica was able to pick up two of those three hits in a pivotal bottom of the eighth inning to take home the victory.

For the Cougars, Dummer was nearly unhittable for the first seven innings, allowing one single to lead off the bottom of the fourth and nothing else. Minnesota Morris was unable to convert its opportunities into runs however, stranding a pair of baserunners in the third and the fourth while also coming up empty after a lead-off double from Olivia Diver in the sixth.

The eighth inning began with a runner on second base for each team. Diver's second double of the night brought Anna Baumann home for a 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning. Unfortunately, St. Scholastica was able to return the favor and then some in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game with a lead-off double and then getting another double in the next at-bat to bring the runner home for the 2-1 walk-off victory.

Diver went 3-for-4 in the game to lead the Cougar attack. Dummer fell to 0-1 despite the excellent outing, while Howe moved to 3-0 on the season.
