Cougar Softball Splits with UW-Superior

After an 8-2 defeat to start the day, Mollie Dummer pitched the Cougars over the Yellow Jackets in the second game, 4-2.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris softball team managed to take one out of two from the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets erupted for four runs in the first inning of an 8-2 win to start the day, but Mollie Dummer mostly silenced the UWS offense in the second game as the Cougars battled back for a 4-2 win. UMN Morris is now 8-14 (4-4 UMAC) on the year, while the Yellow Jackets go to 11-7 (4-2 UMAC).

Minnesota Morris will head to New Ulm on Monday for a non-conference doubleheader with Martin Luther College starting at 2 p.m.

Game One: Wisconsin-Superior 8, Minnesota Morris 2
The Yellow Jackets played small ball in the top of the first to establish a quick 4-0 lead and Minnesota Morris couldn't catch up the rest of the way. Abby Wothe (0-3) was charged with the loss on the day.

The first four Yellow Jacket hitters of the game reached on singles, three of them on bunts. That made it 2-0 before the Cougars recorded an out. Another RBI single made it 3-0 and UW-Superior added a fourth run on a sacrifice fly before Wothe could get out of the inning.

Wisconsin-Superior took advantage of Minnesota Morris errors in the third and fourth innings to extend out to a 7-0 lead. Following singles from Dummer and Morgan Mathews in the bottom of the fourth, an error from the Yellow Jackets allowed Dummer to score. In the bottom of the fifth, Dummer singled in Lydia Mann to make it 7-2.

It was too little, too late from the Minnesota Morris offense however. UW-Superior added an insurance run in the seventh inning and any hope of a Cougar comeback late in the game was thwarted by a game-ending double play.

Mann was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored from her lead-off spot for the Cougars in the game.

Game Two: Minnesota Morris 4, Wisconsin-Superior 2
Following a 1-2-3 first inning from Dummer, Minnesota Morris jumped ahead with a lead-off double from Mann, a sacrifice bunt from Eleanore Steinhouse, and a RBI groundout from Tori Nichols-Kraft.

UW-Superior had one response in game two, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the second to momentarily take a 2-1 lead in the contest. In the bottom of the third, Jasmine Jensen led off with a single and would eventually score on a RBI single from Steinhouse to tie the score at 2-2. Nichols-Kraft followed that with a RBI single that plated Mann for a 3-2 edge that the Cougars wouldn't give up the rest of the way.

In the fifth inning, Steinhouse reached on a single and made her way to third with two down in the inning before Olivia Diver tripled to score her and double the Yellow Jackets up at 4-2. Dummer made sure that lead held up, inducing two flyouts and a groundout to wrap up the sixth and then striking out the side in the seventh to wrap it up.

Dummer (5-5) struck out seven in her complete game five-hitter. Mann and Steinhouse each had two hits to pace the offense.
