SARTELL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's tennis team closed out the regular season on Sunday with a 6-3 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The win likely secures the No. 3 seed for the Cougars in the upcoming UMAC Tournament, though final seedings and matchups for the quarterfinal round will be determined after all conference matchups have been played later this week.
Two victories in doubles set the Cougars up for success.
Megan Arens and BeBe Say quickly won the match at No. 3, 8-3. After the No. 1 team of
Kate Obright and
Kiley Rodarmel were defeated to even the score at 1-1, the No. 2 team of
Abby Burquest and
Sam Tate stormed back from a 5-2 deficit to win their match, 8-6, and give Minnesota Morris the lead heading into singles.
Megan Tschida extended the Cougar lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Kayla Christensen. UW-Superior would come back with wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 over Rodarmel and Tate to make it 3-3 with three matches to play.
Arens edged the Cougars back out in front with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over Kallie Olson at No. 4 singles. The deciding point came from Obright at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chiyono Owa, giving UMN Morris the five they needed to close it out. Burquest tacked on one final point with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Olivia Roberts at No. 5 singles.
Though the opponent and start time is still to be determined, the Cougars know they will start the UMAC Tournament with a home match on May 1.
