NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's tennis team was knocked out of the UMAC Tournament in the quarterfinal round on Thursday with an 8-1 loss to Martin Luther College.
The tone for the day was set when Minnesota Morris dropped three closely-contested doubles matches to fall into an early hole.
Nick Garmen and
Tanner Janorschke fell in their match at No. 1, 8-6.
Jack Flicker and
Cole Peters were defeated by a score of 8-5 at No. 3. In the No. 2 match,
Taiyo Larson and
Kenny Knudson took it to a tiebreaker before falling, 8-7(1).
Things would have had to have changed quickly for the Cougars to recover and though all six singles matches were close, Martin Luther came up with five wins. The lone point of the day for UMN Morris came from Garmen in the No. 1 singles match as he defeated Jonah Schulz, 6-3, 6-4. At Nos. 3 and 4, both Janorschke and Flicker took sets off their opposition but fell in a third-set tiebreaker.
The Cougars will conclude their season on Friday with one final home match against the University of Northwestern. That match will get started at approximately 3:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's UMAC Tournament quarterfinal match between Minnesota Morris and Martin Luther that begins at 1 p.m.
