Women’s Tennis Eliminated in UMAC Semifinals

One of the most successful tennis seasons in recent memory was ended on Wednesday evening by St. Scholastica.

VIRGINIA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's tennis team battled through adversity but didn't have enough left in the tank to get past the College of St. Scholastica in the UMAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday night, falling by a score of 7-2. The Cougars wrap up the season with an overall record of 9-4.

The No. 2 doubles team of Abby Burquest and Sam Tate put Minnesota Morris on the board with an 8-6 victory to leave the score at 2-1 in favor of St. Scholastica heading into singles.

The Saints pulled ahead by a score of 4-1 with wins at Nos. 4 and 6. The remaining matches were very close, but a tiebreaker win for Maya Nibbe over Tate at No. 3 singles clinched the match for St. Scholastica. Tate was among a group of three individuals for the team playing in their second competition of the day after a soccer match earlier in the afternoon.

Kate Obright provided a highlight late in the day with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-7 win over Madilyn Jankila at No. 2 singles for the other point of the match for the Cougars.

The UMAC will soon release all-conference honors for 2021, with multiple awards expected for the Cougars following a great season.
