SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team forced 31 turnovers and used a dominating second-half performance to pull away for a 67-58 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday. The Cougars improve to 5-9 (3-1 UMAC) with the victory.
Despite buzzer-beaters in both the first and second quarters from 
Malory Anderson and 
Jay Kwateh, the game didn't get off to a great start for Minnesota Morris in the opening 20 minutes. UW-Superior held a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased its margin to 35-27 at halftime.
The Cougars ramped up the pressure on UW-Superior in the third quarter and forced nine turnovers which led to 10 points as Minnesota Morris rallied to take a 46-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter. A layup from 
Grace Olson gave the Cougars a 40-39 advantage which was the team's first lead since 2-0 and 
Maddie Smart drove the lane and scored to put UMN Morris ahead going into the last 10 minutes of action.
The fourth quarter began with another UW-Superior turnover and Anderson turned it into a three-point play to make it 49-44. Anderson then added another a few minutes later to give Minnesota Morris a 54-48 advantage with six minutes left. An 8-0 run from the Yellow Jackets tied the game up at 56-56, but Kwateh took over from there and accounted for all six points in a 6-0 run that put the Cougars on top for good. All told, Kwateh scored 10 straight points for Minnesota Morris, essentially sealing the game with a steal and layup in the final minute to put the Cougars up by eight. A free throw from 
Haley Wollschlager in the final seconds provided the final margin of victory.
Kwateh finished with 20 points and had a team-high seven rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Anderson had 14 points and Wollschlager finished with 10 points and seven assists. 
Minnesota Morris is back home at Jim Gremmels Court for three straight games starting on Jan. 21 with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Bethany Lutheran College.
