ROCKFORD, Ill. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team shot less than 30 percent from the floor as a team on Friday evening and lost to Rockford University by a score of 87-52. The loss puts the Cougars at 1-1 on the season.
After making the long drive to Rockford, Minnesota Morris couldn't buy a bucket for much of the first half. The Regents took a 4-0 lead before
Ian Carlin scored inside. Following a three-pointer from RU, Carlin banked in his second shot in a row to make it 7-4 with just over two minutes elapsed. From there, Rockford held the Cougars scoreless for more than nine minutes and went on a 23-0 run to build a 30-4 cushion with nine minutes left in the half.
Corbyn Alexander finally converted a three-point play to end the long drought for Minnesota Morris, but the Cougars still went to the half trailing, 46-22.
Carlin scored on the first possession of the second half and Minnesota Morris cut the deficit to 22 on three occasions in the early going but could get no closer. Rockford had a pair of 8-0 runs to open up the margin even further and cruise to the victory.
Tarik Iyob led the Cougars with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists on the night. Carlin had eight points and blocked four shots.
Pal Dak added seven points and
Thomas Tiernan scored six.
Minnesota Morris is back in action on Nov. 15, traveling to Aberdeen, S.D. for a 7 p.m. tip with Presentation College.
