Shots Stop Falling as Mayville State Downs Women’s Basketball

Following a competitive first half, the Cougars shot less than 25 percent in the second half as the Comets pulled away.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's basketball team lost to Mayville State University for the second time in the past week in a 72-44 loss to the Comets on Tuesday night at James Gremmels Court. The Cougars led after the first quarter and were still in it at halftime before cold shooting the rest of the way allowed MSU to cruise to its seventh win of the season.

After going down 4-0 to start the game, Minnesota Morris kept Mayville State off the scoreboard for more than five minutes and used a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the night. Jay Kwateh had the first two baskets for the Cougars and Tariq Brownotter gave the Cougars the early edge. UMN Morris had a 12-9 lead on the Comets before Jordan Zrust's rebound and putback at the buzzer to cut the Cougar advantage back to one.

Mayville State took the lead for good with a 10-2 run midway through the second quarter to go on top, 23-16. Haley Wollschlager knocked down a three-pointer in the final minute of the half, but the Comets scored late in the frame once again, making a layup to take a 34-25 lead at the break.

The Cougars got as close as seven points in the second half when Jadyn Sondrol started the third quarter with a three-pointer and Shelby Mortenson made a free throw, making it a 36-29 contest. Mayville State then embarked on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes, opening up a 48-29 margin and taking a 58-37 lead into the final quarter. The Comets then added a 7-0 run to begin the final frame, putting the game away.

Kwateh and Sondrol each scored 10 points on the night for Minnesota Morris. Reece Wassink added seven points and had a team-high six rebounds.

Minnesota Morris is back home on Sunday at 1 p.m. to host Presentation College.
