Men’s Basketball Breezes Past Oak Hills Christian in Home Opener

The Cougars were +31 on the glass and held the Wolfpack to 2-of-24 shooting from beyond the arc in Thursday’s 94-59 victory.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's basketball team went on a 20-0 run in the second half to take control in a 94-59 victory over Oak Hills Christian College. The win lifts the Cougars to 4-3 on the season.

Minnesota Morris ended the night with a 56-25 advantage on the glass and had 64 points in the paint, dominating play down low to pick up the win. Ian Carlin had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 7-of-7 from the floor. Kenny Placide also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds on 5-of-5 shooting. Fellow post player Ryan Chamberlain was 3-for-3 on the night.

Following an opening basket from Oak Hills Christian, Minnesota Morris went on a quick 9-0 run. Jacob Brooks had five points in the first five minutes as the Cougars then opened up a double-digit lead at 14-4. UMN Morris opened up a 15-point lead midway through the first half and maintained that margin all the way to halftime, going to the break up by a score of 42-27.

Oak Hills Christian scored the first four points to cut it to 42-31 a couple minutes into the second half, but Minnesota Morris iced the game with a 20-0 run over the next five minutes. Noah Kannegiesser had nine points in that stretch and Jacob Brooks capped it with a corner triple to give the Cougars a 62-31 edge.

The rest of the game was mostly a layup line for the Cougars as they went right at the undersized Wolfpack. The lead grew to as much as 43 points in the late stages before Oak Hills Christian ended the game on a small run.

Besides the double-doubles from Carlin and Placide, Brooks finished the night with 13 points and Kannegiesser had 12 points and a team-high six assists. Tarik Iyob added nine points and both Pal Dak and Jaret Johnson had eight.

Minnesota Morris stays at home at James Gremmels Court on Sunday afternoon with a 2:45 pm contest against Presentation College.
